The Great Outdoors

Every college student has their own unique hobbies outside of their major. However, there seems to be a common misconception that engineering students do not participate in any other activities outside of math or science. I interviewed Liz Kaniecki, a sophomore Civil Engineering student of the 2020 class. Liz is an avid hiker who has traversed many trails around Virginia Tech, including Dragons Tooth, Bald Knob, Kelly’s Knob, and Falls Park. One of the main things she enjoys about hiking is experiencing the outdoors with friends. Liz says, “It is a nice getaway from school and other stressful things. Hiking is one of the fun things to do with friends and it is good exercise for the whole group too.” Hiking is a great way to hang out with friends and meet new people. You can venture out into the great outdoors and make new memories with new friends that will last a lifetime.

Everyone knows that engineering is a challenging major. Liz says that hiking is important to her as an because it gives her an opportunity to destress from the rigors of her field. “As an engineering student, [hiking] is important to me because engineers need to take a break and not burn themselves out from focusing so much on their studies and careers. Because engineering can be really difficult and exhausting at times.”.

One final reason from Liz to go hiking: “Oh yeah, and nature is beautiful too!”.
