Music
For many people, music is a constant in their life. I always try to fill silence with music, whether I’m doing homework, walking to class, or eating in a dining hall. Spotify is a great service for students because they give you half off of their normal rate of ten dollars a month for their premium streaming. Premium allows you to listen to whatever music you want without annoying ads. It also lets you download music to listen to offline, which is great for long road trips wh
Design Team
At Virginia Tech, there are many engineering related clubs possible to join, called design teams. All of these design teams work on projects in the Ware Labs on campus. There are so many different clubs that there is one for almost everything including, land, air, water and even space. Some of these clubs include Astrobotics, Autonomous Sailboat (SailBOT), Autonomous Surface Vehicle Team (ASVT), Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Team (AUVT), Baja SAE (BAJA), Battery Operated Land
Eating on Campus
Virginia Tech is known for having some of the best on-campus food, so it’s important to know how to find your way around all the different dining halls. Probably the most common and well known dining hall is D2. This is centrally located to all the residence halls, and also has the best deal if you’re using a meal plan. For only 2.65, you get access to a buffet of breakfast food that’s guaranteed to fill you up, especially if you just want to go there and stay for a couple ho
Sick at School?
Being sick at college is not a fun time. There aren’t really any “sick days” like there are in high school: homework and classwork still need to be completed, regardless of how ill you’re feeling. With the infamous Hokie Plague spreading all kinds of nasty germs around, here is how to survive being sick at school. An ordinary cold or flu can easily be combated in the comfort and privacy of your own dorm room. Dayquil and Nyquil, Tylenol, and other over-the-counter medications
Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is an awesome activity to get involved in, especially in Blacksburg. Let’s start with the basics: a bike. When choosing a bike, there are many factors that need to be taken into account. There are two different formats for mountain bikes: hard-tail and full-suspension. The difference is pretty obvious, with hard-tails only possessing a front-shock, while full-suspension bikes have both a front and rear shock. Hard-tail bikes are traditionally the best choice f
Hiking around Blacksburg
One of the main things Virginia Tech is known for is all the great hiking spots close by. The Appalachian Trail, which includes places like Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee’s Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Hay Rock, is only 30 minutes away. In addition to this small area, there’s also several other hikes in pretty much any direction. Pandapas Pond is pretty close to VT and happens to have a nice lake and plenty of trails. It’s mainly used for mountain biking, so be aware if you decide to go
Engineering Majors: How Do They Work
Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering functions differently than many other college’s programs, and it can be a little confusing. Hopefully, this can clear up some questions. The college has all engineering students start in the “General Engineering” major, regardless of what major the students want to eventually end up in. In the General Engineering major, students take calculus, chemistry, physics, English, and other first year classes. This includes the Foundations of Eng
