Preparing for Course Request

March 20, 2019

Next semester is probably the thing everybody is least concerned about right now; however, course request for Fall 2019 will soon open, allowing students to articulate to the different academic departments which classes they wish to take. Course requesting classes that are required for your major is very important, as it gives the respective departments an idea of how many students need to take that class; this translates into the number of sections that will be offered, and the capacity of those sections. One should not assume that because a class is listed on a check sheet, that it will be available to every student who meets the pre-requisites, co-requisites, and requirements of that class. It is a distinct possibility that a required, in-major class will be at capacity after course request, with no new spaces becoming available. Departments have also been known to not offer classes if there is a lack of demand, which is based entirely off of course request.

To ensure that you are taking the necessary classes, and to guarantee success in the long run, you should meet with your advisor to discuss next semester and your long-term plan. Prior to meeting with your advisor, it is important to get an idea of where you stand, i.e. review your check sheet and see what classes you should be taking next. When you are meeting with your advisor, make sure to ask about how any events or activities, such as study abroad, co-op, etc., you are planning to do will affect your short-term and long-term plans. An important note to keep in mind is that some classes aren’t offered year-round, so if you decide to leave school for one or more semesters, you should not assume you can pick-up where you left-off.

Course Request dates: March 19-26

Good luck with the rest of the semester!
